Nigel's comments...
IC talk on the forums is quite difficult if you think about it. Other than direct communication (talking first-person to someone else who is physically there, sending someone a letter, etc) it quickly raises questions of how far can you take the storytelling. I.e. as a GM, I don't want to talk for my players - after all, they are playing them and on the other hand, as players how can you respect both other players and the GM's world without having to "tag" someone else every few words.
Here are couple of guidelines that hopefully make some sort of sense.
- You can assume pretty much what you like as long as it is consistent with what has gone before. Further, you should try and start from where you were before: e.g. if our heroes ended an adventure in a cave, start your story in the cave. Think of cinema continuity: people regularly criticise films where a character was holding something in one shot and then not in another, even if there was time for them to put the item down.
- Speaking for other characters (PC or NPC) should only be used for adding flavour. It's generally a no-no, but it can add a great deal to the "story", so use it sparingly and only if it is limited to archetypal behaviour for that character and no choice is involved (even down to and including "One lump or two?").
- Sooner of later you're going to have to hand off to someone else. Which is fine, but try and leave it so the person following up has somewhere clearly defined where you want them to go.
